The Brooks IceBreakers
An all-ages sled hockey team sponsored by Brooks Rehabilitation
The Brooks IceBreakers is one of five adaptive sports which are part of the Brooks Adaptive Sports & Recreation program. We welcome individuals with any limitation/diagnosis that affects mobility and prevents participation in stand-up hockey/activities. Our team practices throughout the year at the Community First Igloo, home of the Jacksonville Icemen.
Sled hockey is an adaptation to what many know as ice hockey for individuals with a physical disability.
Sled and stand-up hockey follow many of the same rules with exceptions of equipment. Players use sleds that are specially designed to sit on top of two hockey skate blades. Instead of one stick, players use two sticks that have metal picks on the end for players to propel themselves. Sled hockey provides opportunities for many types of disabilities at the local level for recreation/competition, all the way to teams that play in World Championships and the Paralympics.
The Brooks IceBreakers practices are for both newcomers and skilled players. Brooks Rehabilitation provides all necessary equipment at no cost, and no prior experience is required to participate.
